If you want to setup environment for C language then you need the Following two Software tools:
- Text Editor
- C Compiler
It is used to write programs. The files you create with editor are called Source files & they contain the Source Code of the program. Typically, the source files of C programs are named with the extension ‘.C’
Examples – Few examples of Editors include Windows Notepad, OS Edit Command, Brief, Epsilon, EMACS, & Vim or vi.
The Name & Versions of Text Editors can very on different OS’s.
For Example – Notepad will be used on Windows, & vim or vi can be used on Windows as well as on Unix / Linux.
The source file of program in the Human readable language needs to be compiled into machine language so that your system can actually execute the program.
The Compiler Compiles the source Code into machine executable program. A free available & most frequently used Compiler is GNU C / C++ Compiler, otherwise you can have compilers either from HP or Solaris.
Installing GNU Compiler

Installing on Linux / Unix
If you are using Linux or Unix, then check is GCC is installed on your System or not by entering the following command from the command line .

Installing on Mac OS
If you are using Mac OS X, then easiest way to get GCC is to download the XCode development environment form Apples Website & follow installation instructions. Once you have the XCode setup, then you will be able to use the GCC Compiler for C / C++.
Installing On Windows
To install GCC on Windows, you need to install MinGW.
To install MinGW, go to the MinGW Homepage & follow the link to the MinGW Download page.
Download the latest version of MinGW installation Program which should be named as MinGW.exe .
When installing MinGW, at minimum you must install GCC-Core, GCC-G++, Binutils & MinGW Runtime.
Add the Bin Sub directory of MinGW installation to PATH environmental variable, so that you can specify these tools by their names on the Command line.
When installation is completed, you will be able to run GCC, G++, ar, runlib, dlltool, & many other GNU tools from the Windows Command line.
